13-year-old Nejra got her organ transplant dream in Istanbul

Bosnian 13-year-old Nejra Hukara regained her health after the liver taken from her father was transplanted to her in Istanbul.

The married couple Fahrudin and Saida Hukara, who have lived in Bosnia and Herzegovina for 24 years, took their 13-year-old daughter Nejra to the doctor when her hands and feet started to swell. Nejra, who was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis as a result of the tests, was treated for 4 months. However, her complaints could not be controlled. Nejra’s liver functions gradually deteriorated and she was told that she needed a liver transplant. While researching for transplantation, the family chose Turkey, one of the best countries for living donor liver transplantation. 50-year-old police officer father Hukara wanted to give his liver to his daughter. The liver taken from father Fahrudin was transferred to his daughter with a successful surgery performed by Board Member of Turkish Transplantation Centers Coordination Association, Prof. Yalçın Polat and his team. Nejra recovered shortly after the surgery. “In autoimmune diseases, there is an attack against liver tissue”   Organ transplant surgeon Prof. Dr. Kamil Yalçın Polat speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA) stated that Nejra had an end-stage liver failure problem.   Prof. Polat stated that: “In autoimmune diseases, our immune system perceives some of our organs as foreign tissue and tries to destroy them. Here, too, there is an attack against the liver tissue, which disrupts the function of the liver. It is very important to plan some medical treatments for our patients before transplantation, if there is no response to them, then the transplant is performed. Since Nejra did not receive the right treatment in this regard, the failure was at the end stage. Now, she has had a very successful transplant process and from now on, she needs to pay close attention to herself. Follow-ups are very important in the first year. It is very important to monitor our patients precisely. “ “It is nice to see my daughter and my husband healthy and happy” Father Fahrudin Hukara also thanked Prof. Polat and his team who carried out the liver transplant of his daughter and said that it was a miraculous situation for Nejra to hold on to life again. Stating that her daughter came to Turkey for the first time and that she would leave Turkey with very good memories including the operation process, Hukara said, “I gave up my dream of being a doctor when I was hospitalized in my country, but when I saw this place, I thought I wanted to work in such a hospital. People here are very caring and loving. So I decided to pursue my dreams. It is like a miracle for all of us. I am very happy that this journey of hope that we started as a family has ended happily. ”    Mother Saida Hukara said, “I was very worried about both my daughter and my husband, but now it is nice to see both of them healthy and happy … It is worth everything to see them happy and healthy.”
