Two brothers from Trabzon, Mustafa Uyar (39) and Yaşar Uyar (40), are now also kidney siblings. Brother Yaşar Uyar took his brother to Istanbul without notifying the family members and gave his kidney to his brother without thinking. As a result of the operation carried out by the head of Memorial Ataşehir Hospital Organ Transplant Center Prof. Yalçın Polat, the two brothers returned to Samsun in good health.
Mustafa Uyar, who has been a dialysis patient for 2 years, expressed the happiness of being healthy after the transplant with the following words:
“I am enjoying being able to drink water to the fullest”
I have been diabetic for 20 years and eventually my diabetes damaged my kidneys. I had a hard time drinking a glass of water. My inability to urinate was increasing. When I went to the doctor, I learned about my illness and my dialysis process had started. For 2 years, I had dialysis 2-3 days a week for 4 hours. As a result, I was very tired. I also stopped working when I started dialysis. My body couldn’t handle the work tempo because I was doing a furniture business.
“I am starting my second life”
While continuing on dialysis, I realized that the best treatment was organ transplantation. We started researching this issue with my brother. My elder brother Yaşar gave me his kidney without thinking. I would do this for him without thinking as well. Thanks to him, now I am starting a second life. I can hardly thank him enough. For example; I used to not be able to drink a glass of water. Now, thanks to my brother and Prof. Polat, I enjoy drinking water to the fullest. Yaşar Uyar, who donated his kidney to his brother without thinking, expressed his feelings after the operation:
“I could not let my brother to die before my eyes”
My brother has had diabetes for many years. Over time, his condition got worse. He has become incapable of work. He had a life between home and dialysis center. The weakness and tiredness he experienced after dialysis was even more annoying. My conscience did not allow my brother to die before my eyes.
“They said you would be half a person too, I didn’t care.”
I started research on transplantation for my brother to regain his health. Our mother and father had already passed away and we came to Istanbul without telling our other siblings and relatives. Our reason for not saying was that they did not look very favorably on me being a donor in organ transplantation. They thought that Mustafa was already ill and that I would also be half a person after the transplant. Frankly, I didn’t think about this for a moment. I am very healthy right now and I am standing; so I’m not half a person. When I return to Samsun, I will take over my job. The important thing is that my brother regained his health. Organ donation is a very important issue. After death, our body will go to the ground, why our organs should not find a life in a new body. It was an opportunity for me to donate.
Prof. Yalçın Polat gave information about the kidney transplant he successfully performed:
Living donors are subjected to very detailed investigations in kidney and other transplants. All vital functions of the donor person must be intact. After making sure that it will not pose an additional risk to the person, the transplant is performed. Yaşar Uyar, who gave his kidney to his brother, was also subject to these. Mustafa Uyar, who has kidney failure due to diabetes, can take the kidney of his brother after the examinations. As a result of the successful operation, both are now in good health.
“There is no such thing as being half human”
Before the organ transplantation, it is determined that both kidneys are healthy and that the remaining kidney will be sufficient for the donor. In this case, the living donor can live healthy until the end of his life with a single kidney. I find it wrong to think that if I give one of my kidneys, I I will be half a person.
