May the heart-touching story of Mrs. Nergis, who came to life with the liver she received from her daughter, hope for all of us…
Our 53-year-old patient, living in Izmir and diagnosed with polycystic kidney and polycystic liver disease, applied to us with the development of liver failure. Polycystic kidney disease, an inherited disease, causes fluid-filled cysts to form in the kidneys. This affects kidney functions and over time, kidney failure may develop. ⠀⠀Polycystic kidney disease and polycystic liver disease are linked. Some specific mutations that cause differentiation, proliferation and secretion in bile epithelial cells are detected. As a result, cysts form. Liver cysts appear later and increase with age. ⠀⠀The quality of life of these patients is very low compared to the normal population. As the liver volume increases, the symptoms are exacerbated. The priority in the treatment is to reduce the symptoms by reducing the volume. If the patient will not benefit from partial hepatectomy in polycystic liver diseases that are bad enough to cause ascites and malnutrition, liver transplantation is indicated. As a result of our preliminary evaluation, we decided that our patient, who had severe abdominal swelling, might be suitable for transplantation and invited her to Istanbul for detailed examinations. Simultaneously, we started the search for a donor in the family for living donor liver transplantation. When we determined that her daughter’s examination results were suitable for transplantation, we gave the first good news to our family. We started the preparations for the surgery without wasting any time. The condition of our patient started to get better day by day. We made a contract for the first control appointment with our patient, who was discharged from the hospital with health. We ended another day with good news.
