Osman Yıldız, the father of two children, who lives in Erzincan, was first diagnosed with liver failure. Doctors said that he did not have much time, he should have a liver transplant as soon as possible. Osman Yıldız, who came to the Memorial Ataşehir Hospital Organ Transplant Center, had an end-stage liver failure. He applied for organ donation from a cadaver; however, it was not clear when he could have the donor. They started to search for donors from their relatives. Sibel Topal, his daughter and mother of two children, was found to be the only suitable donor with the tests.
The Head of Memorial Ataşehir Hospital Organ Transplant Center, Prof. Yalçın Polat: “Liver and Veins of Cadaver for Two Patients”
The main vein in Osman Yıldız’s abdomen, to which the liver should be connected, was not on the right, but on the left. Therefore, there was no vein to which the piece to be taken from his daughter could be connected. Another surprise was that the liver to be taken from his daughter had 5 collecting veins (normally 1-3 veins). Therefore, in order for the transplant to take place, both a large vein on which the liver would be sewn and a vascular branch were needed. They tried to get the veins from a cadaver. While the liver taken from the cadaver was attached to the 55-year-old Kadriye Meral Esiner on the waiting list, the vessels that Yıldız needed were obtained from this cadaver donation.
“We Produced a Remedy in Despair”
Approximately 10 centimeters of main artery (aorta) taken from the cadaver and other small vessels were frozen. In the surgery, the main artery taken from the cadaver was sutured to the liver piece taken from Sibel Topal. In addition, 5 more connections (vessel branches) were made. Then it was transferred to the patient. Thus, a very complicated case was solved very simply. Normally, we remove the liver in a living donor liver transplant; but we leave the collecting veins. We sew the liver we will bring into this collecting veins. But this vein did not exist where we would attach the liver. It was not possible to get there from the left where it is located. We did not want to use artificial grafts because the risk of blockage is high. We had to find the closest solution to the original. When a cadaver of the same blood group came out with Mr. Yıldız, we gave the liver to Kadriye Meral Esiner and the veins toMr. Yıldız. Thus, we created a remedy in despair. Our basic philosophy in surgery is to make it close to the original. We performed a surgery that was performed in limited numbers in the world and Turkey. We did not need blood transfusion to the patient during the operation. “
Liver Recipient Osman Yıldız
“I was very surprised when I was diagnosed with liver failure. We have been told that my only chance to survive is a liver transplant. Fortunately, my daughter gave her liver, and my doctor successfully performed the operation. Thank God, I’m very well right now. ” said.
