Our 32-year-old Yemeni patient holds on to life for the second time with the liver he received from his wife/her husband ?
A Yemeni patient with cryptogenic (unknown cause) liver cirrhosis could not receive a liver transplantation in the first stage because his wife/her husband had fatty liver. After evaluating the general condition of the patient, Prof. Dr. Kamil Yalçın Polat and his team decided that the patient could tolerate the time required for the donor to lose weight. Our patient’s wife/husband lost her/hiss excess weight with the diet applied and became a suitable donor for transplantation.Fatty liver in donors is a phenomenon we frequently encounter. In this case, we aim to reduce the fat in the liver and decrease its degree by ensuring that the donors lose their excess weight with a proper diet.According to the diet applied, donors can lose their excess weight between 3 months and 6 months. The most important issue here is the general health status of the patient. If the patient’s life is at risk, we definitely look for a different donor. There should be an ideal ratio between the amount of liver we will receive from the donor and the weight of the recipient (The ideal ratio is 0,8). Since the liver is the only organ that can regenerate itself, it can tolerate this situation. The transplanted and the donor liver grow in a healthy way and complete themselves.
