OUR PATIENT FROM HUNGARY FOUND LIFE SECOND TIME IN TURKEY WITH THE LIVER DONATED BY HIS FRIEND
A patient who was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma and a resection surgery was performed in 2017 in Hungary. Upon the recurrence of tumor, radiotherapy treatment was planned in the same hospital. However, he had another autoimmune disease named “ primary biliary cirrhosis” in addition to his tumor and this led to worsening in his medical situation. Thus, he was recommended for liver transplantation.⠀
However, our patient, who did not have time to wait since only cadaver transplants can be performed in Hungary, began a search for a living donor liver transplantation. While he was doing research on the subject, he contacted us and we made the first interview online with our patient. During the interview, his friend said that he was volunteering to be a donor. Afterwards, we evaluated our patient’s and his donor’s examination results together. As the values were suitable for transplantation, we invited them to Turkey to start the transplantation process. We successfully transplanted a part of his friend’s liver to our patient. We discharged our patient from the hospital in good health on the 14th day, after the transplant after a rapid recovery process. As a team, we are very happy as we touched the life of our patient, who thought that he would not be able to recover, and brought him back to health. In the treatment of liver tumors, resection can be performed if there is cirrhosis or early stage cirrhosis of the liver. However, if recurrence has developed after resection, liver transplantation is the most effective treatment option.
