Our patient with Budd Chiari Syndrome was cured with liver transplantation.

Our 26-year-old patient, who had a disease called Budd Chiari Syndrome, which is caused by occlusion or narrowing of the vein in his liver, held onto life with liver transplantation. Suat’s complaints started to disappear one by one, after we performed the surgery with a special technique which is rarely applied in the world and in Turkey. Our patient is now smiling at life with health. Our patient from Adıyaman, started to have health problems as of January. When he applied to the hospital due to abdominal swelling, his liver enzymes were high and he could not be diagnosed. It was stated that he was not suitable for transplantation. As a result of preliminary evaluation, we decided to transplant our patient who developed liver failure due to complicated ‘Budd Chiari’ syndrome. This disease is a rare disease with a frequently fatal course. Sometimes this clot extends from the vein of the liver to the main vein of the body. When he applied to us, his general condition was bad, and his stomach was very swollen due to the acid collected. The vein of his abdomen, which empties his blood into the liver, was completely clogged with clots. His brother, Muzaffer, came to rescue Suat, who needed a liver transplant to save his life. It is very difficult to transplant from a living donor in complicated cases of ‘Budd Chiari’ due to hepatic vein and main vein occlusion. Since the main vein was completely filled with thrombosis in this patient, we partially removed the thrombosed main vein and replaced it with a cadaveric aortic graft. We successfully performed an operation with a very high technical level by implanting the liver we received on the aortic graft. There are a few days left until the discharge of our patient, who regained his health after the transplant.
