Zeynep, who was born with biliary atresia, came to life with a liver transplant.
Zeynep, who was born with biliary atresia (a congenital absence of gallbladder ducts) held onto life with a transplantation from her mother. The story of baby Zeynep started with jaundice, as in many newborns. Initially, it was thought that she had neonatal jaundice, but her family had to take Zeynep to the hospital after the jaundice did not go away in a month. As a result of the examinations, a bile duct opening surgery (casai) was performed when she was 77 days old to remove the jaundice of little Zeynep. Afterwards, misfortunes did not leave little Zeynep alone. Hernia formation was observed in the abdomen due to the operation performed. As a result of our evaluations, we decided to have a liver transplant for Zeynep, who applied to us with her family in a dismal state. However, when Zeynep came to us, she was only 5 months old and weighed 4.5 kg. Therefore, we followed little Zeynep closely for 1.5 months and ensured that she had the appropriate weight and body resistance for transplantation. After 1.5 months, Zeynep weighed 5.2 kilograms and was ready for transplantation. Zeynep’s mother, Mrs. Sacide, became a donor and opened the doors of a new life to her little baby.Weight is especially important when deciding on transplantation in pediatric patients. The child to be transferred must reach a certain weight. Pediatric liver transplantation is a very technical operation with peculiarities. ⠀However, with an experienced team, a multidisciplinary work and a meticulously followed process, small bodies take a step towards a healthy future with liver transplantation.
